Achievements
Phase 1
The Language Centre at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) officially launches the "AI-Based Language Laboratory" (ALL) initiative.
Dr. Kevin Chan is interviewed for the HKSYU newsletter regarding current work in AI-powered language learning done by the Language Centre.
The ALL initiative is introduced in the member newsletter of the Linguistics Society of Hong Kong (2025, Issue No. 1).
A sharing session regarding teaching experiences involving AI in university Chinese language learning was conducted at the Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and University Chinese Education(「人工智能與大學中文教學交流會」)at Hang Sang University of Hong Kong by Dr. So Wan Wong.
Dr. Kevin Chan gave an invited seminar to teachers at S.K.H. Ho Chak Wan Primary School(聖公會何澤芸小學)with the theme of using AI to create teaching and learning activities for Chinese language education at the primary school level.
Mr. Sheung Ping Wong presented a poster co-authored with Dr. Kevin Chan at the 5th Academia Sinica Linguistics Forum (ASLF-5) (第五屆中研語言學論壇)introducing the Shue Yan University Cantonese Segmentation Chatbot (SYU-CSC), an in-house chatbot developed by the Language Centre for segmenting Cantonese text.
Phase 2
A team led by Dr. Grace Leung and Dr. Kevin Chan participated in the International Summit on the Use of AI in Learning and Teaching Languages and Other Subjects (AIinLT) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Thomas Chan and Dr. Yang Wei introduced the ALL initiative and two AI-powered chatbots for supporting genre-based writing in Chinese and English.
Dr. Kevin Chan and Mr. Sheung Ping Wong participated in the 7th International Conference on Cross-Cultural Chinese Characters—Hong Kong Forum(第七屆跨文化漢字研究國際學術研討會—香港論壇)at HKSYU. Their team presented a paper titled "The SYU Traditional Chinese Writing Assistant: Performance evaluation and comparative study".
Dr. Thomas Chan, Dr. Grace Leung, and Mr. Sheung Ping Wong attended the JALTCALL 2025 Conference organized by the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) at Tokyo University of Science, Katsushika Campus. The team presented a paper titled "Generative artificial intelligence tools in university English language education: A systematic review".
Team members attended the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF) 2025 at Hong Kong Cyberport. Members showcased two AI-powered chatbots for supporting genre-based writing in Chinese and English, as well as five AI writing assistants and an e-learning resources database available on the Language Centre website. Additionally, on September 13, Dr. Kevin Chan and Ms. Helen Tam hosted a workshop on using AI chatbots to assist in practical and research writing tasks.
